Seroquel, a prescription drug made by AstraZeneca for the treatment of schizophrenia and other neurological disorders, can make users more susceptible to developing diabetes, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, and other life-threatening conditions. By balancing levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, Seroquel has proven effective in treating certain neurological disorders. However, serious side effects of the drug have also been demonstrated.
A 2003 clinical study suggested that people taking Seroquel were three times more likely to develop Type 2 (adult on-set) diabetes, the most common form of the disorder. Seroquel patients were also more likely to become obese and have high cholesterol. In January 2004, the drug maker cautioned physicians about the serious side effects.
If you or a loved one was prescribed Seroquel for schizophrenia or another neurological disorder and developed diabetes, hyperglycemia, or another condition, you have rights. Scientific studies have shown that people taking the antipsychotic drug Seroquel are far more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those not taking the drug. People on the drug may also develop high cholesterol and become obese, both leading causes of heart disease and heart failure. Also, Seroquel has been linked to a potentially life-threatening neurological disorder called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome.
Type 2 diabetes (also called adult-onset) is the most common form of diabetes among Americans. The disease leaves the body unable to produce enough insulin needed to turn glucose into energy. While diabetes affects patients of all ages, African-Americans, Latinos and the elderly are more susceptible to the disorder.
